Australian Domains

There are a number of Second Level Domains (2LDs) within the .au domain. Each 2LD has a purpose, as indicated in the list below. People can register their domain name in the 2LD(s) that is most suitable for their needs.

For commercial entities, such as companies (with ACN as registered through ASIC), and businesses (registered with state governments).

net.au
For commercial entities, such as companies (with ACN as registered through ASIC), and businesses (registered with state governments).

id.au
For individuals who are Australian citizens or residents.

org.au
For charities and non-profit organisations.

asn.au
For incorporated associations, political parties, trade unions, sporting and special interest clubs.

New-Zealand Domains

Prospective name holders are strongly encouraged to select the second level domains (2LDs) that matches the most appropriate community of interest. Applicants choosing 2LDs that might be viewed as inappropriate by the general Internet community do so at their own risk.

For the unmoderated 2LDs the final choice of the appropriate 2LD to use, and the name chosen, rests with the applicant.

Co.uk for commercial enterprises

The .co.uk domain is managed by Nominet UK and is a fully open domain.  It
is intended for use by commercial enterprises and businesses, and is the
largest Second Level Domain in the UK.

The net.uk Second Level Domain is a restricted domain intended for NIC
(Network Information Centre), NOC (Network Operations Centre), and other
administrative use, and users are required to be Internet Service Providers
(ISPs).

The org.uk Second Level Domain is a fully open domain.  It is for
organisations which do not 'fit' into any of the other Second Level Domains
of the .uk Top Level Domain. These may include: charities, trades unions,
political parties, community groups, educational councils, professional
institutions, etc.

The me.uk Second Level Domain is intended for personal use. Domain Name
registrations made under me.uk are expected to be made for natural persons,
such as Mr John Doe registering johndoe.me.uk. Registrations are made on a
first-come, first served basis

The .ltd.uk and .plc.uk second level domains is a restricted domain intended
for companies.  Users are restricted to one name per registrant, and the
name that a registrant can have is worked out via a standard set of rules.

The sch.uk second level domain is a resticted domain intended for schools,
where the definition of a school is given by the appropriate government
agency.
