.eu
A .eu domain is the country code domain for the European Union. It is run by the registry EURid vzw. The extension is open to any organisation or resident in the EU member states, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. With over 3 million registered domains, it is one of the most popular country code extensions in Europe.
A .eu domain supports DNSSEC, which helps protect your domain’s DNS records from tampering. Names can use internationalised characters and run from 2 to 63 characters. Registrations can be taken out for 1 to 10 years, and registration is usually processed within 1 to 3 days. Each registration also includes a free personalised email address.
A .eu domain is a good choice if your business or organisation is established in the EU, EEA, or you are a resident there. It works well alongside individual country code domains, and it helps you target the European Union as a whole. Before you register, confirm that you meet the eligibility rules and that your contact details are accurate.
Registration is limited to people and organisations with a connection to the European Union or the EEA.
- You must be a citizen of or resident in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.
- Alternatively, you can register as an organisation established in one of those places.
- Companies with a registered office in the European Union are also eligible.
Renew before your expiry date to keep the name and avoid losing it.
- After expiry, a 39 day grace period applies, during which you can still renew the domain.
- There is no separate redemption period.
- Once the grace period ends, the name is released and becomes available to others.
You can move an existing .eu domain to Domain Central from another provider.
- You need the authorisation code from your current registrar.
- Transfers usually complete within a day once the authorisation code is supplied.
- Your domain must still meet the eligibility rules for the new registration.
The registrant of a .eu domain can be changed, and the term stays the same.
- The change of registrant does not alter the length of the registration term.
- The new registrant must also be eligible to hold a .eu domain.
