How do I choose a domain name?
You need to take into consideration a name that reflects your business, is easy to spell, is available and meets the required eligibility and allocation criteria for your chosen domain type.

How long can I register a domain for?
The length of registration offered varies between TLDs but the minimum time is 1 year, with some domains such as .com available for up to 10 years at a time.
Can I register a domain that is already taken?
If a domain name is already registered to someone else, you will not be able to register or transfer it. If it appears as though the current owner is not using the domain, you can try reaching out to them via any publicly available contact information listed in WHOIS.
What is WHOIS, and why is it important?
WHOIS is a publicly available database that contains information about registered domain names, including the owner’s contact info.

Can I keep my domain registration information private?
Yes, where the domain extension supports it. ID protection currently costs $10.95, and availability depends on the extension.
How much does a domain cost?
Domain prices depend on the extension. .au domains start at $10.95 AUD per year including GST, and .com.au domains start at $15.95 AUD per year including GST. Premium domains can cost significantly more.
What happens if I forget to renew my domain?
We send renewal reminders before expiry. If a .au domain lapses, it enters a 30-day grace period during which you can renew it at the normal price. After that, it is released and anyone can register it. .com and .net domains follow the standard grace and redemption periods. Recovery during redemption costs $220 including GST.
Do I own the domain, or does Domain Central?
You do. The domain is registered in your name as the registrant, not ours. You can move it to another registrar whenever you like.
Do I need hosting to register a domain?
No. You can register a domain and leave it parked, point it at a site hosted elsewhere, or add hosting later from the same account.
What is the difference between a domain and hosting?
The domain is your address, for example yourbusiness.com.au. Hosting is the space your website files sit in. You need both for a website, but you can buy the domain first and add hosting when you are ready.
Can I change the registrant on a .au domain?
Yes, but .au rules treat this as a new licence rather than a sale, so the new registrant must meet the eligibility criteria in their own right. A change-of-registrant fee applies. Raise a ticket and we will provide the form and confirm the fee for your request.
Can I register a domain for someone else's business?
.au domains must be registered in the name of the entity that meets the eligibility criteria. You can manage the account on a client's behalf, but the registrant details must be theirs.
Can I buy a domain that is already registered?
Not directly. You can approach the current holder using the contact details in WHOIS.
